Art Maker Statement

I feel like we are so lucky to be alive in 2018!  Not only can we appreciate art and ideas in books, sculptures and painting; but, we have the privilege of the internet, film, television, photography and multiple other forms of post-modern media!

My name is Dan Brown and I absolutely love consuming and interacting with all forms of media.  Since I grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico, I have an intense appreciation for great sunsets, great weather and open space.  Georgia O'Keeffe's (one of my favorite artists) work does well to capture the feeling of the frontier-esque landscape that sprawls across the southwest.

However, it is the limited access and some of the politics that drove me out of New Mexico and inspired me to explore the cosmopolitan environment that is New York City.  Almost everywhere we look in New York could, arguably, be a space for great video and photography.  And, I am especially interested in how cameras, cinematography and mise-en-scene can carry a narrative or a message a creator is trying to convey.

I aim to develop an understanding of how to manipulate cameras in order to accurately express myself and the ideas I wish to explore.  New York- with all of its character and grit- inspires me to want to be involved in the arts.  I want to understand how Darren Aronofsky, one of my favorite artists, does so well to tell a story with ruthless and witty applications of photo and video editing.

And, it is especially now, in this toxic political climate that we find ourselves in, in Post-Obama America, that I feel art and creative production must be unrelenting, unforgiving and uncensored!
